I have often referred to myself as a Community Nomad when speaking about my blog and Instagram page. Rather than stating the obvious of “I write a blog” or “I take photos my feet/shoes”- there was a strong desire to come up with something less generic. A job title says a lot about you – so what phrase, description, or thought-provoking description would stop people in their tracks?
After spending some time online and thinking outside the box – the obvious choice was to take a page from Corporate America. Apple has Geniuses, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has a Director of First Impressions (aka receptionist), and Grasshopper has an Ambassador of Buzz (aka communications associate).
As the imaginative wheels began to spin, Community Nomad quickly rolled off the tongue in an aha moment! Creative but yet simple and it embraces the initial vision of the blog and Instagram account! Let’s break it down:
I love Winston-Salem. I love this town. I love its culture. And, this is HOME. I wanted to share my hometown through creating awareness of what of Winston-Salem, North Carolina (and the entire Piedmont Triad) has to offer!
This blog was created to highlight the idea of being a tourist in the Piedmont Triad Area. Experiencing the fascination of being a tourist while remaining in the comfort of the local geographic area. Supporting the idea of supporting local business, enjoying what the homegrown culture, and exploring the local history.
Community can be defined as a place where you are from, a group that shares similar interests, or the connectivity of elements that bind us together or provide a feeling of being a part of something larger – Winston-Salem can fill all of these buckets in my adventures.
Many folks think about a nomad as someone without an established home. I tend to associate the word to describe someone who wanders from place-to-place – which is exactly what I do and communicate with my adventures! I visit places both on and off the beaten path, places that are highlighted in highly distributed travel publication and other than have just opened its doors.
It’s invigorating to explore – regardless if the place is 10 miles or 10,000 miles from home. As a ‘local’ nomad, my travels typically stay within a 50-mile radius of home. However, I do have the opportunity to travel beyond these geographic constrains and highlight these escapades via the NCTriadGril Instagram page!
The Instagram account tends to focus on my daily journey. It’s a simple snapshot in time and a unique way and to document the sights of my daily life. The daily posting just provides and distinct perceptive – my shoes or feet are always included in the image.
You could almost consider the photos as a daily self-portraiture or a “selfeets”. My feet are my connection to the world around me; they are my transportation and they are my sustained engagement to the world around me.
The song, Stand, by R.E.M. could put it in perspective. It’s all about becoming involved in the places you live and work.
Stand in the place where you live
Now face North
Think about direction, wonder why you haven’t before
Now stand in the place where you work
Now face West, think about the place where you live
Wonder why you haven’t before
I do receive the occasional weird glance from strangers when I explain to them I’m a Community Nomad, especially when the Instagram account is mentioned. The response, It’s not weird, I promise; just way to document life’s journey one step at a time usually lessens the tension and leads to a deeper conversation.
